Michael Wilkinson

(American, b. 1954)

“I want to portray men and women as having the power to make their dreams become reality.”
— Michael Wilkinson

Michael Wilkson is an American romantic-realist sculptor. He was born in California in 1954 and is still active today. He is most renowned for his ethereal and sensual acrylic sculptures of the human figure that blend form with the abstract. In addition to working with the acrylic medium, he also has many bronze castings in his oeuvre.

In his early life, Wilkinson served as an illustrator for the US Air Force. While stationed in Japan, he developed an admiration for the elegance of Eastern art and architecture that would later reflect in his work. In 1978, Wilkinson traveled to Europe where he studied the classical works of masters like Michelangelo and the ancient Greeks. While the artist is self-taught, he considers such masters and influences to be his “teachers.” Following his European travels, the artist moved to New York City to begin his sculpting career.

The complicated process of creating his works begins with sketching out his ideas, which he later translates into a clay sculpture. The clay sculpture is then used to create a plaster model that can be further refined with higher detail than the clay. Then, a new mold is cast that will be used for the acrylic model. The artist continues to refine, sand, and polish the final acrylic piece until he is left with an ambient and fluid sculpture. These sculptures are often of men and women, either alone or together, displaying what Wilkinson describes as the “essence of passion.”

It is no doubt that Michael Wilkinson is one of the most popular sculptors in the United States into the 21st century. His use of the acrylic medium to create such beautiful works is truly original. His pieces are viewed at many galleries across the US.
