Peter Max

(American, b. 1937)

“I never know what I’m going to put on the canvas. The canvas paints itself. I’m just the middleman.”

-Peter Max

Peter Max has become an icon in contemporary American culture.  He is best known for employing a psychedelic aesthetic and bright colors into pop culture themes. In a period of three years, Max’s artwork was licensed by 72 corporations and the line of products generated over one billion dollars in retail sales.

Born in 1937, Peter Max was born to a Jewish family in Berlin, Germany. A year later, in the midst of the Nazi Movement, the family fled and settled in Shanghai, China until 1948. After several years in Israel and months in Paris, which Max attributes much of his appreciation of art to, they ended up in Brooklyn, New York. After studying at the Art Students League of New York in Manhattan, he started his own studio, “The Daly & Max Studio,” alongside his friend Tom Daly. There, Max found his signature style embracing his interest in astronomy, and subsequently described his celestial themed work as the “Cosmic ‘60’s” period. This style quickly became the face of the psychedelic, counter-culture movement, and was adapted for commercials on national television, the September 1969 cover of Life Magazine, and even the 1974 Worlds Fair memorabilia stamp.

As one of the most successful artists in history, Max has painted for six Presidents of the United States, had his art on display in U.S. Embassies, and has been the official artist for 5 Super Bowls, The World Cup USA, The World Series, The U.S. Open, The Indy 500, and countless more events. He has had over a dozen solo exhibitions and his art continues to be collected and exhibited today.
