Stephen Holland
(American, b. 1941)
Born and raised in New York City, Holland is best known for his portraits of celebrities and famous athletes. He wore a brace on his leg as a child, and was therefore unable to participate in sports. He would sketch his friends while he watched them play, and it is here where his gifts began to grow. He attended the School of Industrial Art, now famously known as the High School of Art and Design, where half the school day was devoted to the arts. He then went on to attend the Pratt Institute, Art Students League, and School of Visual Arts. He often used magazine images as his inspiration for painting athletes, as live models were out of his price range.
Several teams have recruited Holland as their official artist or commissioned him, including the Los Angeles Kings, LA Dodgers, Baltimore Ravens, and more. He was also one of twelve artists chosen by the United States Olympic Committee to represent the 100th Anniversary of the Olympics. Holland can capture an essence of humanity in his paintings, of our struggle and triumph, of our spirit and glory. His skill in catching that pivotal moment that appears to be live-action as opposed to a still image is also remarkable. Originally, his style was heavily black, white, and gray, but it eventually evolved not only to use bright colors but also include collaged elements.
