Stephen Holland

(American, b. 1941)

Born and raised in New York City, Holland is best known for his portraits of celebrities and famous athletes. He was handicapped as a child, and was therefore unable to participate in sports. He would sketch his friends while he watched them play, and it is here where his gifts began to grow. At the beginning of his career he attended the School of Industrial Art, now known as High School of Art and Design, in which he committed more than half of each day to his studies. After he attended the Pratt Institute, Art Students League, and School of Visual Arts all located in New York City. He was unable to afford live models and resorted to magazines for his subjects, his inspiration for painting athletes.

Teams have recruited Holland as their official artist or commissioned him, such as the Los Angeles Kings, LA Dodgers, Baltimore Ravens, and more. He was also one of twelve artists chosen by the United States Olympic Committee to represent the 100th Anniversary of the Olympics. Holland is capable of capturing the humanity, the struggle and triumph, spirit and glory all in his paintings, truly a remarkable talent. His works capture that pivotal moment in time that appears to be live-action instead of a still image. He also introduces stencil, paper, digital poster to collage into his paintings.
