Eyvind Earle
(American, 1916 – 2000)
“I never plan in advance, I simply let myself be led by instinct, taste, and intuition. And it is in this manner, that I find myself creating visions I have never before imagined…”
— Eyvind Earle
Eyvind Earle was a contemporary artist, author, and illustrator. He is known for his styling and backgrounds for Disney animated films in the 1950’s, and is perhaps most widely recognized for his contributions to the original Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, and Lady and the Tramp animations. With influence from traditional Japanese paintings and a touch of science fiction, all of Earle’s masterpieces are truly captivating and unique.
Earle was born in New York in 1916, and at the age of 10 began his career as an author and artist. Earle attained critical acclaim from such publications as Time Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, the New World-Telegram, the Art News, and the New York Sun. Many art critics struggle to classify Earle’s work, as it is neither contemporary nor traditional, but rather a style that paved the road for animation and digital art. Signature features of his master landscapes include large geometric forms, which bring a supernatural aura to everything from hills to distant waves. Praise for Earle’s unique techniques celebrates their creation of delicate moods as well as their meticulous attention to detail.
Earle has proven his importance in the world of art, not only having a lifetime of successful solo exhibitions around the world, but a permanent place in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rahr-West Art Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, and Arizona State University Art Museum’s inventory. In 1998, he was also honored with the Winsor McCay Award for lifetime achievement in animation.
