Neal Doty
(American, 1941-2016)
Neal Doty’s boldly colored visual compositions crescendo into a beautiful and visceral experience of art. Viewers explore a dynamic and spirited realm through his vibrant color palette, exciting textures, and metallic accents. His work revolves around themes of music, spirituality, love, and life. His style is largely expressionist – a modernist style with an emphasis on subjective emotional effect, with Cubism and Surrealism influencing his vision and approach. A fondness for jazz is visible, as is the influence of Picasso, Mondrian, Matisse, and Dali. Within his creations, improbable elements find balance and function in surprising ways.
Doty was a renowned, award-winning American artist, rich with creativity and talent, which he thoroughly explored through his powerful body of work. He was a prolific artist, worked in a variety of mediums including acrylics, oil and colored pencil, and is known for “pushing the envelope” with his inventive techniques in printmaking and painting. Whether he was etching, printmaking, drawing, or painting, his passion was evident throughout his oeuvre.
He was born in Glendale, California in 1941. He began his education in art at the age of 26 at the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles. In 1968, he met his soon-to-be wife Julie, whom he married only a few weeks later, and with whom he would remain for 46 years until her passing. He earned his AA in Fine Art from Los Angeles City College in 1971, and his BA in Fine Art from California State University at Northridge in 1973. As an art student, he developed a friendship with famous Abstract Expressionist painter Hans Burkhardt, whom he thought of as a ‘much-loved mentor’ and trained him to keep control of his artistic tools.
After art school, Doty would not only serve in Vietnam, but also attend the USC School of Medicine and work for a few years as a paramedic in his hometown, before moving to Palm Desert, California for the remainder of his life. Neal passed away at the age of 75 in October of 2016, survived by his daughter, Irene, grandson, Mario, and many appreciative fans of his work.
Neal Doty attained success as a widely acclaimed artist across the world, receiving many prestigious commissions and awards, including 1st Place in the 1976 Larchmont Art Exhibit in Los Angeles. He also worked with Paramount Studios in Hollywood in 1977. His work has been shown at the New York Art Expo, the Washington Art Fair in Washington D.C., and the Basel Art Fair in Basel, Switzerland. His paintings are in major collections world-wide including those of the Emperor and Empress of Japan, Prince Ranier of Monaco, Elton John, and Sister Sledge, as well as in corporate collections like those of Paramount Studios, 20th Century Fox Corporate Offices, the Graphic Arts Society of America, and the Cousteau Society.
