“Art cannot be criticized because every mistake is a new creation.”
- Mr. Brainwash
Mr. Brainwash, pseudonym for Thierry Guetta, is a major pop artist and videographer in modern day. Guetta was born in Paris, France however, located to Los Angeles at age 15 with his family after his mothers’ death. He attended Fairfax High School for nearly a year before dropping out and organizing events around Hollywood. He also sold clothing in Los Angeles, Miami, and New York before his street artist transformation.
In 1999, a trip to France sparked the graffiti interest in Mr. Brainwash. He learned from his cousin who was the infamous street artist Space Invader, and with his videographer skills he filmed Invader, Fairey, and other street artists. After a chance meeting with Banksy in L.A. due to the need for a local source to help find good spots for some of new pieces the two became inseparable. They even pulled off a stunt at Disneyland, which Banksy filmed regarding Guantanamo Bay. The culmination of the countless hours of video recording led to the movie “Life Remote Control” which as Banksy puts it “It was an hour and a half of unwatchable nightmare trailers” and Mr. Brainwash was convinced to abandon video production and as a joke to start doing street art. It ended up being the best advice he had ever been given.
In 2009 Banksy and Mr. Brainwash collaborated on Banksy’s show Barely Legal that celebrities and collectors attended. Afterward, the pair also worked on Academy Award nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop that debuted at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. With the newfound notoriety Mr. Brainwash was born and his first show “Life is Beautiful” has sold over a million dollars worth of art, within the week after the show ended.
Mr. Brainwash has had numerous fashion and music collaborations, for example designing album covers for Madonna in 2009 and helping the launch of Ray Ban’s limited edition Artist Series in 2015. In addition, Mr. Brainwash has been involved with art projects that aim to raise public awareness. He has also created several murals, such as the September 11 mural in New York City at the World Trade Center.
Today, Mr. Brainwash works and resides in Los Angeles. His artistic vision has contributed across the world and continues to impact all of his fans.
