Guillaume Azoulay

(Moroccan, b. 1949)

“Abstraction is the flight, not the bird.
— Guillaume Azoulay

The brilliance of Guillaume Azoulay’s art centers on his ability to convey a purity of line, creating strong illusions of fluid motion and life. It is through his marvelously meticulous, satisfyingly organic line work that Azoulay achieves balance, harmony, contrast, and illusions of depth and movement in each of his compositions.

Guillaume Azoulay, a self-taught artist, was born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1949.  His parents settled in Paris when Azoulay was ten and by the age of thirteen, he was sketching and selling his drawings on the street. As Azoulay met people from various parts of the world, an interest in traveling began to bloom. When he was fourteen, he left home and hitchhiked across Europe and the Middle East. His desire to see and be part of the life, history, and beauty of the world took him from Copenhagen, to Rome, to Lisbon, and to Jerusalem. Azoulay made the world his university; people were his main subject, and he documented their joys, pains, and ways of life. During his travels, the artist became fluent in five languages.

Azoulay moved to Israel in 1967 where he applied to Betzalel, the Middle East’s most famous art academy. They rejected his application, but Azoulay was not discouraged. He studied drama and graduated as an actor. Azoulay appeared in the Israeli production of the rock musical Hair as well as other shows on the Israeli stage. Then, no longer able to split his time between his the theater and painting, he focused on the expression of visual art. Azoulay relocated to California in March of 1976 where he now lives with his family.  Azoulay’s wife is Charmaine Seal, a noted ballerina, and one of Azoulay’s favorite subjects.  They have two sons, Lawrence and Arnoud, and one daughter, Ondine who is the subject of an etching at the Bibliotheque National Du Louvre in Paris, France. One of his most notable accomplishments is being the youngest artist to be accepted in the permanent archives of the Musée du Louvre, in Paris.
