(Mexican, 1915-2006)

“I seek to glimpse the soul of the Mexican people”
— Raúl Anguiano

Raúl Anguiano was born at the height of the Mexican Revolution in Guadalajara, Mexico on February 16, 1915. At just five years old, he began using images of celebrities as art models including Charlie Chaplin, Rodolfo Gaona, and Mary Pickford. At 12, Anguiano attended Guadalajara’s Free School of Painting and quickly became enthralled with pre-Hispanic art. With the help of Master painter Jose Vizcarra, Anguiano organized the group Young Painters of Jalisco from 1928 to 1933. During this time laborers and workmen served as his models.

In 1934 Anguiano moved to Mexico City. There he met with Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco and became familiar with their works. At the age of 21 in 1936 Anguiano was commissioned to paint his first mural, La Educación Socialista. Throughout his career, he painted nearly 50 murals in Mexico, the United States, Jamaica, and the Vatican home to La Crucifixión. He also illustrated several books and published 50 catalogs of his works. In addition, Anguiano lectured in Mexico, the United States and Europe, and taught art in classrooms ranging from grade school to university level until close to his death. Anguiano died on January 13, 2006, in a Mexico City hospital after becoming ill with heart problems.

Anguiano is internationally recognized for his oil paintings, etchings, pencil and ink drawings, sculpture, and ceramics. His contributions transformed him into a major 20th century artist. His depictions of indigenous people educated the world about rural life in Mexico, and they continue to speak to and fight against discrimination of Mexican people.
